The Liberal party of Canada kicked off their Can150 conference today, during which they plan to discuss ideas for Canada’s future in the name of our upcoming (in 2017) 150th birthday.

But do they really need an expensive and convoluted conference to know what Canadians are really looking for from their politicians?

The Globe and Mail recently conducted a poll and the overwhelming majority were most concerned about recent changes to Income Trust rules.

People can contact their MP directly, and regularly do!

But what comes of all this?

The Liberals used to have a site call OnProbation.ca where they invited the public to submit ideas they would ask of Stephen Harper.  The number one question for quite some time was regarding the Income Tax scandal.  Those questions were never asked and the web site no longer exists.  I’m sure someone within the Liberal party feels really good about themselves but that’s about it.

And why should you care?

Because they’re the only real alternative to the Conservative government.  And I don’t care who’s in power – Cons, Libs, NDP, Bloc, Rhino – as long as they govern properly but the Libs have the best (only?) chance of forming a government.  As long as they’re going nowhere the Conservatives will govern as though they had no limits, no oversight, no challenge to their authority.  This is necessary in a democracy – even in an autocracy – to ensure that the decisions made are the best ones.  If you don’t have to think about what you’re doing, if you’re not worried about the consequences you’re not going to put in the effort to make sure you’ve covered all the bases, considered all the possibilities, and evaluated all the outcomes.

Thanks to Life Hacker – and @JohnnyCanuck – I’m no longer distracted by Buzz when I open my GMail. Not that there’s anything wrong with Buzz but I use Twitter, and everyone and everything else uses Twitter. But so far all Buzz does is clone your Twitter and other social posts. If you want to Buzz your friends have to Buzz too – if they’re still on Twitter they won’t get your Buzzes. In essence, Buzz is like a glorified feed reader that lets you make comments and stuff to yourself – kind of like Google Reader (except I prefer and use Reader often during the day).

FINNISH PANCAKES

Serves at least two

1. In the oven at 425 degrees Fahrenheit bake for 5 minutes:
   • 1 tablespoon butter
   • 2 cups sliced apples, peeled & cored
2. Mix in a bowl
   • 3 eggs
   • 1/2 cup milk
   • 1/3 cup flour
   • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
   • 1/8 teaspoon salt
3. Pour on top of apples and bake for 15 to 20 minutes

The breakfast was delicious! Topped with maple syrop and cinnamon we’re definitely going to be making this one again.

The doctor wasn’t able to reduce it in his office since we’d waited so long and we ended up at the Childern’s Hospital.  And kudos to them because they were amazing.  So now our daughter’s running around, happy as a clam albeit with a cast on her arm for the next ten days!

Hopefully everything turns out okay when they take the cast off and there’s nothing more to worry about.
